A Brief History of Taylor

Taylor’s story began long before it was a city. The land was originally part of Ecorse Township, mostly rural farmland with little development. Peter Coan became the area’s first landowner in 1830, purchasing an 80-acre parcel from the U.S. government. His legacy lives on today through Coan Lake in Heritage Park, named in his honor.

By 1847, residents in the western part of the township felt too disconnected from civic life and petitioned to form their own community. The petition was approved, and the new township was named after Major General Zachary Taylor, a Mexican American War hero who later became the twelfth President of the United States.

Growth continued through the late 1800s. In 1876, the Wabash Railroad built a line through the township, and a small station named for local landowner George E. Hand gave the area its early nickname: “Hand Corners.” German settlers built the West Mound United Methodist Church in 1882, a landmark that stood until it was relocated to Heritage Park in 1994.

Taylor officially became a city in 1968, and its modern history includes visits from Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, the construction of the striking Gateway Bridge in 2005, and the unforgettable moment in 2021 when the Taylor North Little League team brought home a Little League World Series championship, the first for Michigan since 1959.
